Most sewer odour problems are due to the presence of hydrogen sulphide (H2S). The concentration of gaseous H2S is related to the sewer conditions and the level of dissolved sulphides present in the sewage. Odourlock® PL (Fe2+) and Odourlock® BC (Fe3+) reduce sewage odour by reducing the formation of H2S. This is achieved by binding dissolved sulphides in an insoluble precipitate (FeS). By effectively removing the dissolved sulphides from the sewage flow, the formation of odorous sulphur based compounds is dramatically reduced.
The principle ‘wetted’ substrate present in sewer networks is concrete. Concrete is corroded by sulphuric acid which is formed by the oxidation of H2S by Thiobacillus spp. bacteria present on the sewer walls (see diagram below). Odourlock® PL (Fe2+) and Odourlock® BC (Fe3+) reduce sewer corrosion by reducing the formation of H2S. This results in a dramatic reduction in the formation of sulphuric acid on the sewer walls.
Benefits of Odourlock® include:
Reduced odour complaints associated with sulphides in sewers and at treatment works. Deferred capital expenditure due to sulphide related corrosion. Odourlock® instantly reacts with dissolved sulphides when added to sewage*. For best results, sewage pH should be above 6.7.
